"Being lost is worth the coming home..."

Every year many Basenjis end up in need of new homes for one reason or another.  Some are found as strays wandering the streets, some are dropped off at shelters with no explanations, others are given up by families who were not suited to the Basenji's nature (bought one without doing their research), or families who have no more time for the dog because of a new baby's arrival, a job change or a move.   In some cases Basenjis have had to be removed from unsafe or unkind environments.

For the right person or family, adopting a Basenji is an excellent alternative to buying a puppy from a breeder.  Keep in mind if you are considering Basenji adoption that the same guidelines you would use for buying a pup from a breeder apply.  DO YOUR RESEARCH!  Many Basenjis fall on hard times because a family bought them without knowing much~or anything~about the breed.  Basenjis are charming and beautiful.  They don't bark, they don't have a doggy odor and they shed very little. These things are wonderful traits but they are not the only reasons for getting a dog.

Another thing to keep in mind if you are considering Basenji adoption is that a rescue Basenji usually requires even more patience and understanding.   Some of them have been abused or neglected in former homes and it will take time to build up their trust in people again.  Others might have medical or behavioral problems that have gone unchecked and many are just confused and traumatized.  But rescue Basenjis DO BOND with their new families!  In fact, oftentimes the bond can be even stronger since you were the one who gave him the second chance at a better life.

All your patience, love and understanding will be returned to you tenfold if you adopt a Basenji.  Hundreds of rescued Basenjis have gone on to enrich the lives of the wonderful people who have welcomed them into their families.   Rescued Basenjis (with proper AKC registration or ILP numbers), have competed in lure coursing, obedience agility and pet therapy programs.  Please note that if your interest lies in breeding  and/or conformation, a rescue Basenji is not for you.   All rescued Basenjis are spayed or neutered before being placed in their new homes.

If you're considering adoption, please go a step further and consider adopting an older Basenji (better known as a "Golden Opportunity Dog").   Older dogs are every bit as deserving of a new home. They make wonderful companions and are well suited to those who aren't as eager to experience the wilder antics and higher energy of a younger dog.
