Basenjis have a life expectancy of ten to fourteen years of age. It is not uncommon for a healthy Basenji to live to age seventeen or older. However, like other pure bred dogs, there are certain health problems that Basenjis are more prone to developing and these include Thyroid conditions, PRA or Progressive Retinal Atrophy which can cause blindness and Fanconi Syndrome, a disease affecting the kidneys. Basenji Companions, a club devoted to the pet Basenji, has several excellent, in-depth articles about Basenji health issues posted on their website. It is recommended that you read as much about their health problems as possible.
