Buying a dog from a pet store should NEVER be an option!!  Responsible breeders who breed for sound temperament, health, conformation and function would never sell their dogs to a pet store.  Basenjis, any dog, purchased from a pet store are usually products of a commercial breeder--a puppy mill.  These dogs are bred for the sole purpose of making a profit.  They are not bred with the betterment of the breed in mind.  No care is given to the dog's health or temperament.  They are bred to produce puppies that can be sold to pet stores and, in turn, sold to the unsuspecting public.  This is not to say that Basenjis purchased from pet stores can't make wonderful, loving pets.  Many pet store Basenjis who end up in rescue go on to new homes and become an adored member of the family. But buying a dog from a pet store sends out a dangerous message: We made money off this breed.  This breed is popular. We want more dogs of this breed.  Thus, the pet store contacts the puppy mill and basically puts in an order for more dogs and more dogs of questionable health and/or temperament are produced and the cycle continues.  It should also be noted that dogs are quite often kept in horrendous conditions while at puppy mills.

Basenjis are not the breed of dog for everyone so if you are considering getting one make sure you do extensive research.  This includes reading everything you can get your hands (or eyes) on, meeting and talking with Basenji owners and breeders, and interacting with as many Basenjis as possible.  Leave no bone unturned!  You need to get out and meet some  Basenjis "in the fur!"  I've found that most Basenji owners and breeders are very helpful, friendly and open to people who are interested in learning more about the breed. A dog show is a great place to start networking in order to meet different breeders and Basenji owners.  Contact as many people as you can and set up visits if possible.  Remember, a good breeder will interview you but you must also interview the breeder.  You are getting a breeder as well as a Basenji and a breeder whom you respect, like and trust will be worth his/her weight in gold.  A responsible breeder will prove to be an invaluable source of advice, support and encouragement as you adjust to your new life with a Basenji.

Another way of acquiring a Basenji is through rescue.
